If you download a .zip nightly and extract it in its own directory, then you should be able to run it without any problems.
The nightly I've been using today based on what will be 0.8 is a good bit faster than 0.7 in terms of lag of the UI. It's far from perfect, but it's getting quite usable. Now if they could cut down the delay on opening new windows JUST a bit....
